laura_villalobos06smEven in the United States, women’s bodybuilding is niche sport, but in Mexico it’s quite rare.  However, this didn’t stop Laura Villalobos as she pursued the sport in her native land.  Laura’s courage to be the person she wanted to be despite what others thought about her sport and her physique is certainly to be commended.  Strength Advocate is honored to share her brave story.

When did you first become curious about weightlifting?  In my childhood, when I was about 7 or 8 years old, while watching the uncles I grew up with train. They had dumbbells made of tin cans and cement. I was always drawn to the look of firmness, vascularization and defined abs. Something in me told me that I wanted to look like that.

laura_villalobos09smHow did you start your fitness journey?  In 2004, I started competing in state bodybuilding shows, with little experience and budget, so I faced the reality of what it took to fulfill my dream. I was studying college at that time, so I dropped off school in 2005 in order to work and be able to pay for my prep. It was in November of that year that I started to compete frequently.

laura_villalobos08smHow many competitions did you participate in?  I participated in 8 state competitions.

What does it mean to be a muscular woman in Mexico? How do people react to it?  For me, to be muscular has always been a personal achievement. I am passionate about the challenge of hypertrophying a female body. I feel happy and proud of seeing my progress. I have seen all kinds of reactions towards me, both of approval and disapproval, and from other women, unfortunately.

There were times in which I would get on a taxi cab and the driver would ask me if I was a man or a woman. I got used to it and instead of feeling offended, I liked it, since it meant that I was looking very firm and lean. I really have not achieved such a masculine look that could cause that kind of confusion… but we are in Mexico, where the physical, sports and nutritional culture (and maybe even in every topic), is very low.

laura_villalobos01smHave family and friends been supportive of your weightlifting?  Not at first, but when they realized that it was something I was set out to do, they ended up accepting it and being supportive.

Other than competing, what are some other ways you stay motivated?  It has become a lifestyle; I like to keep a muscular look because that is the way I like to be all the time.

laura_villalobos07smWho is someone athlete or non-athlete who has inspired you?  It may seem odd, but Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean-Claude Van Damme, since I grew up watching their movies. Lenda Murray as well.

What advice would you give to women who decide to start weightlifting?  The only advice I can give them is to do as they please. If what they want is a big and muscular look, go ahead, and don’t let anything or anyone stop them.

Cuándo inició tu curiosidad por las pesas¿  En  la infancia, a los 7-8 años ya que veía entrenar a  mis tíos con los qué crecí. Ellos tenían mancuernas hechas con cemento y latas. Me llamaba la atención el aspecto firme, la vascularización y sobre todo el abdomen definido. Algo en mí deseaba lucir así.

Cómo iniciaste tu carrera en el fitness¿  En 2004 comencé a participar en competencias estatales de físicoculturismo, con poca experiencia y nada de presupuesto; ví de frente la realidad de lo que significaba mi sueño. En ese tiempo aún cursaba la licenciatura la cual trunqué en 2005 para trabajar y costearme las preparaciones. Fue hasta Noviembre de ese año que inicio a participar constantemente.

En cuántas competencias has participado¿ 8 fueron mis participaciones en competencias estatales.

Qué significa ser una mujer musculosa en México¿ Cómo reacciona la gente cuando te ve¿ Para mí ser musculosa siempre ha representado un logro personal de superación. Me apasiona el reto que implica hipertrofiar un cuerpo femenino. Me siento muy  contenta y orgullosa cuando veo mis avances. He visto todo tipo de reacciones hacia mi persona desde gestos de aprobación hasta los de desagrado, lamentablemente de otras mujeres.  En un tiempo a cada taxy que subía el conductor me preguntaba: con todo respeto es hombre o es mujer? Llegué a acostumbrarme y en lugar de ofenderme me agradaba ya que para mi representaba que lucía firme muy firme. La verdad no he logrado un grado de virilización que llegue a causar confusión…pero estamos en México, donde la cultura de educación física, deporte; nutrición por no decir todos los temas es bajísima.

Tu familia y amigos te han apoyado en tu decisión de entrenar¿   En un principio no, pero al darse cuenta que realmente era algo que iba a hacer terminaron aceptándolo y apoyándome.

Además de las competencias, de qué otra manera te mantienes motivada¿  Se ha convertido en un estilo de vida, me gusta mantener una imagen musculosa porque es así como me gusta lucir siempre.

Qué atletas o personajes te han inspirado¿  En mi infancia, aunque parezca extraño, Arnold Schwarzenegger y Jean Claude Vandame pues crecí viendo sus películas. Y Lenda Murray.

Qué consejo le darías a otras mujeres que quieran competir o entrenar con pesas¿  El único consejo que puedo dar es que hagan lo que ellas y solo ellas deseen, si lo que quieren es un aspecto grande y musculoso, adelante que nada ni nadie las detenga.
